If yes, then you might be our new Danish Red Cross intern at the IFRC office in Nairobi.

The internship

The intern will be seconded from the Danish Red Cross to the IFRC East Africa Cluster in Nairobi, reporting the Head of the Disaster Management Unit. Experience or interest in in the field of disaster management, such as cash transfer programming and forecast based action is an advantage. The internship has a broad focus on all the different aspects of disaster management, such as raising awareness, fundraising, preparedness, risk reduction, situation reports and administrative and financial elements.

Your tasks

The intern will work as an integrated part of the IFRC East Africa Cluster. This will include:

  • Contribute to the development and implementation of activities under the Eastern Africa Disaster Management platform
  • Dissemination of information and material to support fundraising activities related to the above initiatives
  • Collect data and information from Emergency Response operations and produce Situation Reports when needed including communication material
  • Take part in the formulation of relevant operational narrative and financial reports
  • Support the administrative and financial management functions of the operation unit in close collaboration with finance and administration units
  • Participate in relevant meetings and workshops

We expect

We expect that you work independently, are action driven and provide an effective service delivery. You are well structured and resourceful, interested in humanitarian work and want to be part of the Red Cross. We also expect you to have an interest in working closely with local actors, and that you have the skills to engage in different project activities. We imagine that you through your study have knowledge of international humanitarian work and/or insight into partnership projects.

Furthermore, we expect that you have excellent report writing and communication skills to be disseminated in a professional, but not academic language, as well as experience in administration and financial management.

It is an advantage if you have previous experience working with volunteers as well as experience from or knowledge of the Red Cross Movement.

As a person, you are result oriented with a cultural sensitivity. You have an ability to both listen and facilitate dialogues with a flexible approach, adapting your way of working depending on the culture and capacities.

Fluency in both Danish and English is a must.

It is required to have an internship agreement with the university in place prior to the start of the internship, thus enrollment in a relevant master programme e.g. Disaster management, social science, political science, African studies, development studies or similar, is a requirement of this position.

As an intern with the Danish Red Cross in the Africa region, you will get the chance to gain first-hand experience of what it is like to work for the world’s largest humanitarian organization. You will learn about Red Cross’ work in East Africa and receive ongoing supervision and support by the experienced Disaster Management professionals. You will get to work alongside professionals who are experts in their field and gain valuable and relevant work experience within a dynamic workplace. At the same time, an internship with the Danish Red Cross in the Africa region will provide you with an opportunity to apply what you have learned during your academic programme in a challenging, yet inspiring setting.

The internship begins in February 2020 and ends in June/July 2020 and runs for 5 months. The weekly hours are 37. The internship is unpaid; however, accommodation, vaccinations and insurance are covered by the Danish Red Cross. Before arriving at the internship, a thorough training by the Danish Red Cross will be undertaking in Denmark and online.
